Janumet XR Side Effects – Common and Rare

Janumet XR Side Effects

Janumet XR is a medication that is used to help control the levels of glucose in the blood in people who have type 2 diabetes (the medication is not used in people with type 1 diabetes). Although a single medication, the drug is actually comprised of a pair of diabetes medications. Both Sitagliptin and Metformin are contained in Janumet XR and each works in different ways to help the body try to maintain normal blood sugar levels. While effective, a combination drug like this can mean that adverse effects are more common, and Janumet XR side effects do include both those of the Metformin it contains as well as the Sitagliptin. Both compounds are common diabetes medications and have side effects of their own, all of which can present in persons taking the medication.

Janumet is an effective form of type 2 diabetes treatment because it works in two ways to help control blood sugar. Its contained metformin has two functions. It reduces the amount of glucose that the intestines absorb and also reduces the amount of sugar that is manufactured by the liver. Sitagliptin is most useful following meals, when blood sugar levels can spike. The chemical compound is used to balance levels of insulin in the body following a meal. On an individual level, both Sitagliptin and Metformin have their own adverse effects to be aware of, and Janumet XR side effects are essentially a combination of these two common forms of type 2 diabetes treatment.

Most people taking Janumet XR experience only mild side effects, if any. The most commonly experienced Janumet XR side effects are gastrointestinal in nature and include an upset stomach, vomiting and nausea. Some people taking the medication may experience headaches and dizziness, as well as an unpleasant taste in the mouth that is described as being metallic. Unfortunately, some of these Janumet XR side effects can be far more serious than they appear, and may be early symptoms of some of the more rare and serious adverse effects of the medicine. Stomach related symptoms, for instance, might be a sign of lactic acidosis. Although these symptoms often start out relatively mild, they become more severe and intense over time. When stomach symptoms are compounded with other symptoms related to lactic acidosis such as muscle weakness and pain, numbness, breathing problems and dizziness, prompt medical attention is required. Lactic acidosis is one of the more rare but very serious Janumet XR side effects, and can be fatal in many cases.

Unfortunately, lactic acidosis is not the only very serious side effect of taking Janumet XR. The Sitagliptin that it contains is the main ingredient in a related drug called Januvia. This medication has been linked to serious problems related to the pancreas. Both pancreatic cancer and pancreatitis have been identified as possible Janumet XR side effects, and both can be serious and relatively fatal in many cases.

Another perhaps unusual occurrence in people taking Janumet XR is an unusual drop in blood sugar levels. Since the medication is used for lowering blood sugar levels, this may seem very strange. However, some people taking Janumet XR may experience periods of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) that are usual or indicative of lowering blood sugar levels too much. Unlike other Janumet XR side effects, this situation is often easily corrected and is most commonly related to improper medication dosage or drug combinations that need their dosages altered.

Janumet XR is used to help reduce elevated blood sugar levels in persons with type 2 diabetes. It’s important that medications like Janumet XR exist because the complications associated with untreated or poorly managed cases of the disease are very serious. While early symptoms of type 2 diabetes are often manageable, later symptoms as the disease progresses can lead to debilitating complications like heart trouble, neuropathy, blindness and more. Despite Janumet XR side effects, the medication is very useful for preventing the onset of serious complications like these as well as contributing to everyday symptom reduction. It’s only appropriately used and most successful however in persons who commit to diabetic diet guidelines, a healthy increase in physical activity and weight loss and solid and supportive consistent medical care.
