Therefore, cinnamon and diabetes can be even more intimately linked when considering the spice’s many uses in place of sugar.

Cinnamon is becoming more and more prevalent in supplements for diabetes, based on the recent research suggesting its usefulness. One study in particular found that persons taking supplements for diabetes in the form of cinnamon capsules over a 40 day period showed reductions in blood sugar levels by as much as 24%. This is a huge indicator of how potentially important the link between cinnamon and diabetes is, however there is also a warning to understand here. Because cinnamon is considered a food and not a drug, it is very poorly regulated by the FDA. Therefore, anyone considering cinnamon supplements for diabetes treatment or prevention should carefully research available supplements and speak with their healthcare provider before doing so.

Despite the benefits that may exist between cinnamon and diabetes, there are also risks involved, especially for people taking certain types of medications. For instance, cinnamon as a natural diabetes treatment is not appropriate for people using certain diabetes medications or other medicines that affect the liver. Additionally, using cinnamon along with other natural diabetes treatment indicated herbs such as fenugreek, bitter melon and devil’s claw can also lead to unwanted effects such as blood sugar levels becoming too low.
